In this VFR - GPS Flight Plan we take off from the airport of Sabha (HLLS) [Libya] and land in the the small aerodrome of Waddan (HL72) [Libya].  This stage was just a step to go back to the Lybian coast, too far from Sabha to be made in a single stage.

Find below a short extract and screenshots of the main points of the route. In this journey around Africa I have used the Cessna 172S (Skyhawk)

Take off from runway 13 of the Sabha airport in an clear afternoon. You can see the city behind.

Sebha International Airport (IATA: SEB, ICAO: HLLS) is an airport serving Sabha, capital of the Sabha District of Libya. The airport is 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) southeast of the city.

The Sebha non-directional beacon (Ident: SEB) is located 2.2 nautical miles (4.1 km) north of the airport. The Sebha VOR-DME (Ident: SEB) is located on the field.

The airport shares its runway with Sabha Airbase, which has operations on the southwest side of the airport.  (*1)

Sabha, or Sebha /ˈsɛb.hɑː/ (Arabic: سبها‎ Sabhā), is an oasis city in southwestern Libya, approximately 640 kilometres (400 mi) south of Tripoli. It was historically the capital of the Fezzan region and the Military Territory of Fezzan-Ghadames and is now capital of the Sabha District. Sabha Air Base, south of the city, is a Libyan Air Force installation that is home to multiple MiG-25 aircraft.

Sabha was where the erstwhile ruler of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, grew up and received secondary education and where he also later became involved in political activism. After the Libyan Civil War and the resultant instability in the country, Sabha reportedly grew in importance as a slave auctioning town. However, an investigation by the National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) revealed that while there was illegal slavery, reports were exaggerated, as slave auctions were rare and not made public. The city was later seized by forces loyal to the Libyan National Army (LNA) and its leader Khalifa Haftar in January 2019, but some politicians in the area switched their loyalty to the Government of National Accord (GNA) in May 2020.   (*1)

The desert is going to be again our companion for the rest of the stage.

About 35 nautical miles away from our destination the terrain rises and gets a darker colour.

Continuing the approach to Waddan we leave the mountains behind.

Waddan (Arabic: ودان‎, Italian: Ueddan) is an oasis town of the Sahara Desert in the northeast Fezzan region of southwest Libya. It is in the Jufra District.

Waddan is the oldest city in Jufra District located 230 km (140 mi) south of Sirte, and 19 km (12 mi) northeast of Hun. The town is at the crossroads of the Sirte-Waddan Road and the Fezzan Road. The natural springs support native date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) groves.

During the Libyan Civil War, NATO forces bombed an ammunition store in the town. On 8 September 2011, the town was reported to be under the control of forces allied with the National Transitional Council. (*1)
